Last week, I posted a lengthy tirade about someone who I recently had quite a lot of contact with who demonstrated an absolute disregard to, what I think, are normal manners and general good behavior. I have since marked the post as private as I know that it may offend some people who I truly respect. Mostly, I needed to write it for myself as a catharsis. It helped some.
I’m in no way perfect, but recently I have been troubled by the observation that there are people who are just plain not good about playing nice with others.
The MOD and I were heading up the canyon a few weeks ago for a bit of skiing when we ran into traffic on the canyon road. It was Sunday morning- prime skiing weather and time, and it was tight. There is one way up and one way down that everyone must take. So, when we hit traffic, we got in line and we waited at a dead stop.
We watched a big old SUV wind through the traffic on the wrong side of the road and then try to nose in between two little cars who were all completely stopped. Apparently, this guy was hot to ski. So, what did all the clever ski bum types do? Road rage came in the form of a one sided snow ball fight as the people in the two little cars got out and pelted the SUV with snow. It was funny, and it was even funnier when the MOD realized that he knew the guy in the SUV.
Yesterday was Easter Sunday, and these days we are little better than Christmas and Easter Catholics. But, when I go, I put something on that’s appropriate for church and act accordingly. I know it’s bad, but there is not one thing religious about taking three kids to church. I am busy feeding cheerios to Bee and ssshhhhing the Llama. And then watching him ssshhhhh other little kids. Add that to one deaf ear, and it seems like a futile mission. Although, a well heeled one.
So, we were in the baby room, and it was quite loud in there- enough that I couldn’t hear the priest at all.
My attention was diverted to the family in front of me anyway. We were separated by glass, but there was a mom and dad and three teenage children. First of all, the mom and dad were pretty touchy feely. I mean, it’s great that they love each other, but it just came off as creepy in church. But the crazy part was that the two teenage boys played handheld video games (I have no idea what the things are called) and the girl was texting the entire time. In church.
I thought that the little old lady sitting next to the family sans class was going to fall over in the pew.
If those kids were mine, games and phones would be taken away indefinitely, but I guess the main point should be is that they would never have gotten into the building in the first place.
Am I wrong to think that people are capable of following even the most simple guidelines of basic decorum?
