I think it's useful in some circumstances (like porta-potties), but using it everyday, everywhere, is excessive. My wife is a nurse and uses the stuff at work, but not anywhere else. She says it's completely unnecessary. If you adhere to basic hygiene and common sense the chances of getting sick from a stray germ are extremely slim. Moreover, studies have shown that using hand sanitizer kills off useful good bacteria along with the bad and helps promote growth of super-germs. Our kids are completely healthy and have rarely been sick and we are not clean freaks. I suspect the huge increase in use of anti-bacterial products over the last 20 years or so is the result of a very good promotional effort by the corporations that make and sell the stuff, and is not based on actual need. The CDC says "Moreover, in several recent prospective trials, alcohol-based rinses or gels containing emollients caused substantially less skin irritation and dryness than the soaps or antimicrobial detergents tested" http://www.cdc.gov/handhygiene/ Actually, I think alcohol gels with skin conditioners are better on your hands than soap and water.
